Consumer barometer

Updates to the OECD Consumer Barometer ceased on 03 April 2026. While the Barometer itself has been discontinued, the underlying consumer opinion survey data continue to be updated and remain accessible via the OECD Data Explorer.

The OECD Consumer Barometer corresponds to the monthly growth rate of the normalised consumer confidence indicator (CCI), computed as the average of: i) financial situation over the past 12 months , ii) financial situation over the next 12 months, iii) the general economic situation over the next 12 months and iv) major purchases over the 12 next months. Normalisation is achieved by subtracting from the CCI its mean and dividing by its standard deviation. A value of 100 is added for rescaling purposes. In this form, an OECD Consumer Barometer reading greater than 100 signals a boost in consumer confidence towards the future, indicating an attitude to spend more on major purchases in the coming year, complemented by a modest propensity to save. Conversely, values below 100 indicate a pessimistic approach towards future developments in the economy, valuing saving over consumption.
OECD statistics contact
Statistics and Data Directorate
