What StackData is

StackData is a catalog of open government and public data, and a tool that resolves a plain question into a table or chart drawn from that data. It is an independent project operated by an individual based in California, United States — there is no company behind it. It is provided as a service, as it is, and may change or pause as it develops.

The data is not ours, and it is not advice

The numbers come from third-party public bodies — statistical offices and international organisations — under their own open licences. StackData indexes and re-presents them; it is not their author or guarantor. Figures can be incomplete, out of date, modelled rather than measured, or simply wrong, and where a source differs from what StackData shows, the source is correct. Nothing here is professional, legal, financial or medical advice. Do not rely on it for decisions where an error would cause harm without confirming against the original source, which every answer links to.

Accounts, tiers and fair use

Some features are free within a daily limit; others require a paid tier with credits. You are responsible for activity under your account or API key. The limits exist to keep the service available and to protect the public data sources from overload — do not try to circumvent them, and do not automate the service in a way that hammers those upstream sources.

Free-tier boards are public

If you use the free tier, the boards you save are public: they appear in the Explore feed and other people can view and copy them. Your identity is shown only as an anonymised handle. By saving a free-tier board you agree to this, and you agree not to put confidential or personal information into one. Paid boards are private by default. See the Privacy page for detail.

Acceptable use

Use StackData lawfully. Do not use it to break, overload or probe the service or its upstream sources; do not present StackData's output as an official government record; and do not remove source attribution when you reuse a result. If you publish data that appears in the catalog and want a record corrected or withdrawn, that request is honoured — see Attribution.

What you may do with results

You may use and share the charts, tables and images you generate, including commercially, provided you keep the source attribution that each result carries — the licences of the underlying public data require crediting the publisher. Exports made on the free tier include a StackData mark; paid exports do not. Any number StackData computes itself (for example a correlation) is presented as its own, clearly labelled, and exists in no source. The StackData name and logo are ours and may not be used to imply endorsement.

Payments

Paid tiers are billed through our payment providers; card details are handled by the provider, not by StackData. Credits are consumed as described in the app. Because agent payments settle on-chain and plan credits are consumed on use, payments are generally non-refundable except where required by law; any refund terms that apply are stated at the point of purchase.

No warranty

StackData is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, fitness for a particular purpose, or uninterrupted availability. You use it at your own discretion and risk.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, StackData and the people behind it are not liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss arising from use of the service or reliance on the data it presents. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid for the service in the preceding period, if any.

Changes, law and contact

These terms may change; material changes will be posted here with a new date. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California and the United States, without regard to conflict-of-law rules, and disputes are subject to the state and federal courts located in California.
