Share of burned areas - Local areas

This dataset provides estimates on the shared of burned areas in OECD Local Areas.

Burned areas are identified using the Globfire Fire Perimeters dataset, derived from the MODIS MCD64A1 burned area data product. The data displays the share of area burned in the 5 years from the period 2019-2023.

Data sources and methodology

Burned areas are estimated using the Globfire Fire Perimeters dataset, derived from the MODIS MCD64A1 burned area data product. The OECD Local Data Portal displays the share of area burned in the last 5 years. MODIS provides globally consistent, high-frequency observations with both spatial and temporal continuity, allowing harmonised monitoring of burned areas across countries and regions. These estimates may differ from official subnational fire statistics due to differences in methodological approaches, such as the use of top-down satellite-based detection versus bottom-up administrative or field-reported fire records, as well as variations in spatial resolution, detection thresholds, and classification algorithms.
