Land cover built up area - Local areas

<p>This dataset provides land cover built up area estimates for OECD Local Areas. </p>

<p>The land cover built up area indicators are based on the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) dataset. The following classes of surface and volume are available: <ul> <li>Residential built-up</li> <li>Non-residential built-up</li> <li>Total built-up</li> </ul> </p>

<p style="color: #0965c1; font-weight: bold;"> The data is organized at Teritorial Level 2 (TL2). To visualize the data at Local Area level, click on the corresponding TL2 indicator. </p>

<h3>Data sources and methodology</h3> <p align="justify"> Built-up surface indicators are comprised of total built-up surface, residential built-up surface, and non-residential built-up surface, all expressed in square meters (m2) per capita. These indicators are derived from grid-level population and built-up surface estimates from the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL). Built-up surface growth is computed by comparing the built-up surface at local level in 2020 and in 2000 (in %). GHSL is used as it provides harmonised, globally consistent coverage at fine spatial resolution (100 m), enabling the production of comparable subnational indicators on built-up areas. These estimates may differ from official subnational built-up statistics due to differences in methodologies, such as top down remote-sensing based estimations versus bottom up cadastral or administrative data, along with differences in satellite imagery sources, spatial resolution, and model accuracy used to detect and classify built up areas.</p>
