Innovation statistics - Regions (for 'Developer API')

This dataset provides the whole set of OECD regional innovation - patent applications, R&D personnel and R&D expenditure data - and is recommended for users who wish to query a large amount of data. It is not designed for visualising results using the Table and Chart buttons. To access the ‘Developer API query builder’, click on the ‘Developer API’ button above. The query filter is generated according to the current data selection. To change the data selection, use the filters on the left. To get started check the API documentation.

This table presents information on patent applications for selected technologies, along with data on research and development (R&D) personnel and expenditure by sector of performance. The R&D statistics are mainly available for large regions (TL2), and patent data is also available for small regions (TL3).

Definition of regions

Regions are subnational units below national boundaries. OECD countries have two regional levels: large regions (territorial level 2 or TL2) and small regions (territorial level 3 or TL3). TL3 regions are grouped into typologies based on shared characteristics. For economic analysis, TL3 regions belonging to the same Functional Urban Area (FUA) with more than 250,000 inhabitants are aggregated into a single metropolitan region to reduce distortions from commuting. See the OECD Territorial Correspondence Table (xls) and the OECD Territorial grid (pdf).
